The implications of food waste weigh heavily on society, the economy, and the environment. Among the UN Sustainable Development Goals, building a sustainable and resilient food system explicitly addresses food waste and its reduction by 50% by 2030.
In full alignment with its values, Fruttagel has decided to support the Waste Watcher International Observatory (WWIO) on Food and Sustainability as a sponsoring partner.
The research project is conceived and developed by Prof. Andrea Segrè, president of Last Minute Market—a social enterprise and accredited spin-off of the University of Bologna for the “Spreco Zero” (Zero Waste) campaign—with technical partner IPSOS and scientific partner, the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences of the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna.
The survey aims to explore food choices and behaviors in different countries through a questionnaire structured around four main areas:
- purchasing and consumption behaviors in individual countries and the motivating factors
- characteristics of dietary habits in different countries
- specific features of individual product supply chains in each country
- the effects of policies and best practices
The Observatory seeks to provide society with tools to understand the social, behavioral, and lifestyle dynamics that generate and shape household food waste. Studying the social and behavioral causes of waste makes it possible to generate knowledge, culture, and support for designing (public or private) actions aimed at reducing food waste.
